LOCATION The municipality of Argao is 66.90 kilometers southeast of Cebu Province. It is bounded in the north by the municipality of Sibonga, in the south by the municipality of Dalaguete, by Bohol Strait in the east and in the west by municipalities of Dumanhug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal and Badian. The municipality has 18 kilometers shorelines which streches from the boundary of Sibonga to the boundary of Dalaguete and an average depth of 29 kilometers from the cost to the enterior along the boundaries on the western portion of the municipality. AREA The municipality occupies a total land area of approximately 20,753 hectares or 206.53 square kilometers. Of the total land area, 13,606 hectares are classified as alienable and disposable lands while 5,350 hectares are timber/forest lands. Argao as a town is composed of 45 barangays created under Commonwealth Acts of 1935 and Republic Acts of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Out of the total barangays, ten(10) barangays are located along the coastal portion of the municipality namely Guiwanon, on the northern boundary followed by Taloot, Bulasa, Binlod, Langtad, Poblacion, Tulic, Bogo, Talaga and Casay on the southern boundary. Reflected in the Official Land use Plan of the municipality, the barangays of Poblacion, Langtad, Talaytay, Canbanua, Lamacan and Tulic are declared to be the Central Bussiness District of the municipality. The set of Municipal Government is barangay Poblacion which is located in the heart of the town. CLIMATE AND SOIL Generally the climate of the municipality of Argao is moderate. Variations can be observed depending on the elevations at each level. Wet and dry seasons are two climatic conditions experienced in the municipality. With the months of January to May as dry season and June to December as wet months. From the data of NEDA VII, the average annual rainfall is 1500 mm to 200 mm, while the annual evaporation is 1800 mm to 2100 mm. Temperature are observed to a maximum of 32 degrees centigrade and a minimum of 19 degrees centigrade. Floods that are caused by heavy rains during the wet season only extends up to the river banks. Data taken from the Department of Agriculture shows that Argao has two(2) dominant soil types, the faraon clay loam and the logo clay loam. And from the data aquired from NEDA VII, soil types and structures vary depending on the facets and land forms of the area comprising the municipality.
TOPOGRAPHY From the 45 barangays comprising the municipality of Argao, (32)thirty two barangays are considered as interior/mountain barangays having ragged terrains characterized by hilly and peak mountain ranges. Level and nearly level lands with less than 18% slope compose 9.30% of the total municipal areas. Slopes ranging from 18% to 50% cover more or less 66.50%. Mountainous and highly mountainous areas with 50% slope and above comprise approximately 24.20% of the total land area. The highest recorded elevation is 593 meters, located within the barangay of Tabayag and Conalum. Other localities with remarkable elevations are Canbantug with 500 meters, Lapay with 400 meters, Lengigon with537 meters and Tulang with 500 meters. Argao river extends more or less 8 kilometers leading towards Langtad seashore facing Bohol Strait. This has access to the barangays of Canbantug, conalum, Tabayag, Usmad, Catang, Panadtaran, Jomgao, Canbanua, Talaytay and Langtad. However, its tributary streams extends up to barangays of Salug and Bulak, which are already parts of the municipality of Dalaguete on the southern boundary. The most thickly populated locality is Poblacion, which is bounded on the north by Argao river, on the east is the seashore on the west by the barangays of Lamacan and Canbanua and on the south by the barangay of Tulic. National road passing through the municipality of Argao streches from Guiwanon on the north boundary and to Balisong on the south boundary with the total length of 18 kilometers. Barangay witth direct access to the nationqal road are the barangays of Guiwanon, Taloot, Bulasa, Binlod, Langtad. Poblacion, Tulic, Bogo,Talaga and Balisong. Generally the shoreline within the municipality is abundant with corals. Isolated portion of the shoreline are nipa and mangrove swamps. Most of the coconut groves are located one(1) to two(2) kilometers from the shoreline and extending from northern to southern boundaries of the municipality.
