The project, which is the first of its kind in the entire Philippines based on its scope, aims to trace all Argawanon family trees. Town genealogist Todd Lucero Sales, author of the recently launched Argao: 400 Years in Legend and History, states that the project, though meant to trace every Argawanon family tree, has some limitations. “First, I will only trace the family trees of those families who have been living in Argao since the Spanish period and those families who may have come from somewhere else but settled in Argao prior to the Second World War.”

My hometown Argao in Cebu celebrates its 400th year of existence this year
By: Sec. Cerge M. Remonde
Festivities held last week to commemorate this milestone in the town’s life drew me back once more to the place that gave me my roots, giving a welcome respite from national concerns and time for some much-needed introspection and reflection – for my hometown’s past and its future. At 400 years, Argao can be considered one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. It was founded in 1608 as a Spanish pueblo. Officials of the town and concerned citizens embraced this heritage and took steps to ensure that the distinct Spanish and early American architecture that give Argao its unique character is preserved. Through these efforts, the church of San Miguel Arcangel remains as it was when it was first built, although time and the elements have taken their toll on its structure, façade and all. Within its walls also remains one of the 14 remaining Spanish era pipe organs.

Operatic music, a string quartet, cultural dances, and so much more provided the entertainment while they dined in a completely made-over coliseum that drew gasps of astonishment and delight from guests. The Garbo 400 Dinner and Awards night on September 27, 2008 was the highlight of the Argao 400 celebrations. The event, which had the ambitious desire of gathering the Who’s Who of Argao, was not only successful in its goal, but more importantly it was a lasting reminder that everything is possible in Argao if people just believe it could be done and if everyone participated and did their part.
